I can’t say that one city is better than the other one, but there are a lot of interesting differences regarding the tube, buses, trains etc.
In both cities there are efforts to increase the tube efficiency and quality and to reduce fraud. In London there is an ongoing plan to improve tube infrastructures.
Here is a table summarizing what I noticed:
London TFL Paris RATP Airports 5 (Gatwick, Heatrow, Stansted, Luton, City Airport) 2 (Charles de Gaulle, Orly) Tube Lines 13 16 Buses 24/24 77 >15 Public Tube Network Size 10 zones 2 zones River Larger Smaller Boat Service Yes Yes Trains to Airports Gatwick Express, Stanted Express, Picadilly Line to Heatrow, DLR to City Airport RER B to Charles de Gaulle, Orlyval to Orly Public Transport Fraud 2% 3,9% Taxis Cab & Mnicab Taxis Parisien Travel Card Price Oyster Card: 150€ a month for 3 zones Pass Navigo: 65€ a month for 3 zones Quality of Service Average for tube, good for buses Average for tube, average for buses Detailed explanation
- Airports: London is better deserved with 5 airports where 2 of them are very close to the center (City Airport, Heatrow) with easy tube/train access.
- Tube lines: More lines in Paris but longer lines in London.
- Buses 24/24: It is a pity that Paris doesn’t have buses crossing the center during the whole night…even during week-ends…On this point, London buses rock.
- Tube network size: London is wider than Paris, with a tube connecting the 10 zones of the city. With only one zone and no tubes in the suburbs, Paris is far behind.
- River: The Thames is larger than the Seine and the ThamesLink boat service is better.
- Trains to airports: London easily wins because of its “Express” trains from all major train stations to all majors airports. Paris and its expensive OlryVal is not efficient.
- Public Transport fraud: because you have people checking your tickets at each tube entrance/exit, and bus drivers always checking your ticket, Londoners don’t fraud in the transport whereas it is a national sport in Paris…
- Travel card price: the London Oyster card price is prohibitive…it is simply too expensive!!! The quality/price ratio is very, very bad…whereas in Paris the price is correct and the quality is better.
- Quality of Service: Entire lines closed during week ends…only in London…Paris tube quality is not good as well (especially during strikes…).
Conclusion
Both cities need to improve their public transport systems. In both cases you can find very annoying problems like closed lines during the week-end or few buses to come back home after an evening with friends…
Finally, the London transport network is bigger than in Paris and better managed, but Paris network is cheaper. Another advantage of Paris network over London: in Paris tube stations you don’t have to “Mind the Gap“…
