Obviously, you are one of those. You drive on the left, or you drive on the right. When you discover a new way of driving, you are always confused and you think: “Damn! Why these people are driving like this? It’s so strange and so difficult! It’s better my way!!!”.
I understand you…I thought the same when I first came in the UK! But UK people must think the same about my (or your) driving style!!
So, here is the question: which driving style makes sense??
Well, first here a world repartition:

As you can see, most people are driving on the right.
Then, let consider a pedestrian who wants to cross the street:

Right-hand traffic and left-hand traffic are equivalent, they just differ by a mirror symmetry, but pedestrians from different countries cross the road the same way, maybe their first look on the road is different: on the right for UK style (because the most dangerous car is coming here), on the left for US style (on our example).
So, our question is still without an answer…but if you take into account the fact that, in the world, most people are right-handed, it is easier to use the gearbox with this particular hand.
In fact, it is difficult to find a logical reason. Some historic answers are given:
- Some believe that ancient travellers on horseback generally rode on the left side of the road. As more people are right-handed, horsemen would thus be able to hold the reins with their left hands and keep their right hand free to offer in friendship to passing riders or to defend themselves with swords, if necessary. This also explains why men’s jackets and shirts have the buttons on the right. It was important to be able to reach a weapon inside a cloak, so for a right-handed person, the cloak had the left flap over the right flap and the right hand could easily reach in and grab the weapon.
- In the UK, the first note related to the traffic rules is from 1756 and said that you have to cross London Bridge on the left. Later, the General Highways Act in 1773 advise horses to use the road on the left, position which was made definitive thanks to the Highways Bill in 1835.
What about the Tube? The train?
In the UK, the Tube and the train are left-hand. In France, the train is left-hand, the tube is right-hand.
Finally, the reason of those differences is not easy to find but we can assume that, the left-hand traffic in the UK is due in part to history (left-handed Roman roads were found in the UK), and to arbitrary decisions (the London Bridge rule). The rest of the world is different maybe because of Napoleon who wanted to do the contrary of British people, or maybe because people are right-handed in majority.
